in june of this year, i had the most fortunate opportunity to go be part of something amazing: a workshop led by none other than Joy Prouty of Wildflowers Photography. if you have never had the pleasure of viewing her work, do yourself a favor and take a look (after you are finished reading this post of course! ) Joy is an amazing individual~ beautiful, unbelievably talented, and down to earth through it all. i, along with 22 other amazing women, went on this journey together into the aspects of our business, our hearts, and our lives to help each other come out the other side stronger, better, more able to capture each of you in a more emotional and meaningful way. we laughed ~ alot, and cried~ also a lot, but it was by far the best decision i have made for my business. stepping back away from everything, priorities, decisions and choices became more clear.

not to mention we were in the little town of Julian, California~ which is an amazing inspiration all in itself.

the first shoot that Joy set up for us were 2 precious little girls in what was supposed to be the gorgeous CA morning sunshine. But God knew better, and instead sent this graceful fog that curled around and provided the most gorgeous and unique lighting. i loved it~ in fact, i cannot wait to shoot in the fog again…

ok, i will quit rambling for now, and let you look…. enjoy.

xoxo.

this wedding was dear in every way. the love that so clearly showed in joe’s eyes when he looked at kailey. the air of a laid back summer wedding with closest friends and family. the way joe’s brother cried along with joe when kailey came down the aisle. joe and kailey are dearly loved, and it is easy to see why. kailey told me when we met that she wanted the wedding to have a spontaneous feeling, like they just decided to have a wedding at the last moment, and chose the beautiful Stonehedge Tearoom.  well done, guys! it was beautiful! best wishes on your new life~

so i may be no where near a “seasoned” photographer, but after 4 years and hundreds of sessions, i have decided to compile a small list of dos & don’ts for anyone who is using a custom photographer (and most of us do.)  do with them what you want, think of it as friendly suggestion icon smile Dear Client... {things your photographer wish you knew}

*DON’T start your consultation with “i don’t want to spend a lot of money….” We understand that you have a budget, and it is commendable when you stick with it. but research your photographer, and know he is in your budget. it insults him as an artist, and says “you don’t seem very expensive valuable”  Totally not what you meant, but it is how it sounds to us.

*DO ask for wardrobe suggestions. that way if your photographer wants to style the shoot, everybody is on the same page. also, what you wear goes a long way to convey your tastes and style to your photographer, and she can get a great feel for who you are.

* DO choose your photographer carefully. if you don’t love his portfolio, chance are, you won’t be thrilled with your photos. while price and location definitely play a part in who you choose, style should always be the first factor.

*while on the shoot, DO trust your photographer! if you loved their portfolio, then they need your trust and cooperation to get the kind of shots you fell in love with. if you trust her, and do what she says, chances are you might make the portfolio too icon smile Dear Client... {things your photographer wish you knew}

*once the session is over, DON’T badger the photographer about when your pics will be done. if you were given a three week deadline, there is a reason. we often stay up till 3 am, sacrificing sleep by night and family time by day to give you the perfectly edited shots. it adds more stress to our load when you keep asking. trust me, we are dying for you to see them, and fall in love with them too!

*if your session includes a cd, DO print out your pics! this is one i am guilty of~ we all are. we are so busy. but “someday” is normally code for “never.” if you don’t get to it within 3 weeks of receiving your disc, you probably won’t do it. and you do a huge disservice to the professional who carefully crafted the photos to not give them a place of honor on your wall or in an album. more than that, you cheat yourself from enjoying the beauty of your family.

*and last, DO thank him or her who gave you your beautiful memories. we are artists, and most of us struggle with confidence at one time or another, wondering if you truly love what we did for you. don’t hesitate to tell them why you love your pictures…as a beautiful and well known photographer recently quoted, “there is no way not to take this job personally.”

we love and appreciate our clients so much. enjoy the beauty of you and your loved ones~

xoxo.

my husband, brett has always wanted to jump out of an airplane. i think he is a little crazy for that, but what do i know? i am NOT an adrenaline junkie. and my dear friend chelsea has always wanted to do the same thing. we talked about getting her and brett together to do it quite a while ago, and on May 22nd, they made it a reality. a few more people came too, and so in all, there were 6 skydivers. we went to Hook Field in Middletown, and after waiting what seemed like an eternity, ( it was in fact 6.5 hours) it was time. i have to say, i was very excited to capture it from the ground. i have no desire to do it myself, but it was amazing to see the plane climb in the sky and then suddenly the sky is littered with these little spots of color as they all came gently floating down. i loved how they looked like those tiny parachute men that we used to throw out the window when i was a kid, and watch them waft to the ground. there were some weather holds and a couple big thunderstorms blew in, so the sky was dramatic and beautiful when it was brett’s turn. when he got to the ground, he was so elated. i am thrilled he got to fulfill a dream.

if you have ever had a dream to go skydiving, you should make it a priority to go this year. it was amazing, and lifechanging for my loved ones. and it’s gotta give you courage…. after all, what could scare you after you’ve jumped out of an airplane?

05/20/2011 My own alamo.

it started in August of 2007, and was excruciating by the time they diagnosed me 2 months later. Excessive sweating, severe abdominal pain, constant diarrhea, and bleeding.  after 3 nights in the hospital and a endoscopy and colonoscopy, I was told i had ulcerative colitis.  i was given information on a low fiber diet and a prescription to Asacol. this condition is chronic, and the nurse told me that i was one of the worst cases she had seen for my age. i reacted in my way, with fear and denial. i took my prescription and ate the white flour and white sugar, cooked veggies and fruits that i was instructed to eat. as i went into my first remission, the fear went away, and i rebelled by returning to my normal terrible habits; be it fried, carbonated, or chocolate-covered. i have had several flare-ups since then, and some of them have been pretty rough. The sight of blood in the toilet, and the pain would scare me back into behaving, but only until the symptoms were gone.

However, this past month has been one of the worst flares i have had, and by the grace of my Father, i have been finally able to wrap my head against how serious this is. if i didn’t make a serious change, a colostomy bag was in my future. by the recommendation of a dear friend, i picked up a book called ” Breaking the Vicious Cycle ” that introduces the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. the SCD diet is grain free, sugar free, and dairy free. and so i stepped out on this terrifying but hopeful journey. today is my 3rd day on it, and it is so so hard. i can have exactly 5 things in the intro phase: overcooked carrots, homemade apple cider, grape juice, eggs, and a variety of lean meats. one of the hardest things has been giving up soda. i drank {gulp} probably 3 a day. and the surprising thing is, i had no idea giving up sugar and caffeine cold turkey would feel so awful. my colitis is recovering by leaps and bounds- in 2 days, i have had almost no pain, and i don’t spend any more time on the toilet, crying and feeling in labor. a miracle!  but my body has crashed through sugar detox, and so the past 2 days have brought nausea, fever, headaches, fatigue, insomnia, and severe aching all over.

but i know i can do this.   because of the most amazing support system God placed in my life before i even knew i would need it. Like one of my kindred spirits that has had her own baptism by fire through a painful and nutritional battle for her son’s health. or the dear dear soul who is doing the diet with me, just to hold my hand and give me strength. many miles separate us, but i feel so much less alone because of it. or the best friends who gave up soda years ago, and promise me that i will get to the place where i don’t have to have that Coke.

and also because of you. You have read my story, and my pain, and i feel the support. thank you so much.

i love you all. xoxo.

There is something so refreshing about shawn & laura. they are so genuine, and the kind of couple that you want to be friends with the moment you meet them. he is funny, and has the greatest laugh {EXACTLY like seth rogan}. and laura is so sweet and comfortable. they have the kind of friendship that  every solid love should be built on. so sweet and unassuming, no pretense, and perfectly fine with whatever comes their way.  we had planned an engagement session in april, and the rain actually let up the day of, so we were able to start the session outside.  shawn plays guitar , and it made sense for him to play for laura icon smile april showers and a beautiful love. {Dayton, Ohio engagement photography} so the busy neighborhood bustled around us…and in this perfect little oasis of blooms and bushes, we captured this sweet romance…

Why hello there! Thanks so much for meeting me here! :) I am a bit unnerved at the prospect of blogging, but excited to give it a shot. First, my disclosure: I am NOT a writer. so forgive me in advance for run-on sentences and uninspiring wording…. i try to say what i want to with my camera ~ if you know me personally, you know that i love to talk, so surely i can learn to write my thoughts. icon razz Debut for both my blog & SPRING!!! {at long last...}

As with any working creative/stay-at-home mom, when it comes to photos, my poor little family seems to get the leftovers of me, while i give friends and clients the best i have to offer. i don’t think that’s ok. don’t get me wrong, i love my clientele, and am so grateful for them.  but my loved ones deserve my best effort, too. so i started planning this shoot in my head months ago. The ducklings worked the perfect charm they were supposed to- i would have never gotten these priceless expressions if i had only begged and cajoled~    the sun came out, just for a day, but it was all we needed.   it felt so good to laugh and play and drink in the sunshine.   Thanks to my dear friend, Chelsea-for the lovely images.
